Well, this is a sad piece of news: A survey by the Employee Benefit Research Institute found that 26% of American workers have less than $1000 in savings.
By the measure of their survey, 26% of workers have less than $1000 in their bank accounts and 401ks. Wow!
If you don’t have savings in your bank account (or even stashed under your mattress somewhere), you don’t have the buffer you need against life’s weirdness. We get sick sometimes. We lose our jobs sometimes. We have things happen to people you care about sometimes. All of these things require cold, hard cash.
